So this summer, I'm going to build myself a gaming PC. Here is the list of parts my brother picked out for me. He is providing the tower and the power supply.

Id get a 1060 and a monitor with 144 refresh rate

1. Why is he picking a 1600X when the 2600X is out?

2. New video cards are about to come out so I'd hold off on buying one right now.

3. I know the Hyper 212 EVO is a very popular cooler but nowadays there's much better ones for around the same price. Tell your brother to do a bit of research and pick you another one.

4. That motherboard is unnecessarily expensive for you. Tell him to find you a cheaper board or to wait for B450 boards to come out since you don't need any of the features X470 provides anyway.

Im not so sure new cards are coming out anytime soon.

I agree with everything Jayd has said. I don't think the 1050 Ti is going to cut it though. It's just not very future proof, free up money elsewhere and get at least a 1060/580.

I also am a big proponent of getting a nice monitor. If you're building a PC in 2018, it has to be with at least 144 hz in mind. The HUGE draw towards PC gaming is that it can do what the consoles wish they could do. Higher frames, higher resolution, multi-tasking, G-Sync, FreeSync etc. There are deals to be had if you scour www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales

She said that he was providing the case and the PSU.

Initially this is a computer that could eventually be beefed up depending on the situation. My brother is providing at least the tower and power supply like I've stated in the beginning. I just know at least this could be a good basic computer that can run games and I can upgrade. I'm also probably going to limit myself until I get a decent paid job to really do a good one.

I would save $$ on the cpu/mobo and aim for something around $250 for a 8XXX intel cpu/mobo deal with stock cooler. The RAM and video card will be expensive enough that I think this is wasting money for marginal gains if any.

The money saved would go toward a 144hz monitor (acer refurbs go cheap these days) and a better gfx card

That may not end up cheaper in the end depending how you source the parts

I hope your brother has a decent power supply for you. There's a lot of stinkers out there.
