I really don't get the point of the article.

The op-ed points a couple of things out, but I don't think it has a particular purpose per se, it's just wanting to point the finger so people will look, you know? Like it wants to get a discussion started in regards to hey, maybe Valve is not a company to be revered.
Like one of the things it points out is the fact that Valve, like any other company, is in business to make money...that we shouldn't keep having this image of them as being the good guys who advocate for us and have our best interests in mind, rather than their own. And that even though they paint this outwardly picture of being this scrappy little company, they're actually worth at least a couple billion dollars and they've actively taken advantage of their customers' zeal to get to that point.

Exactly. The only point I got out of the article is this. Which anyone with a brain already knew. Steam is a business not a charity. When it started talking about the whole refund policy or lack thereof, its when it enforced my thinking all along that the writer of this article is a big faggot douche that had a soft spot for Valve then had an epiphany. Article is useless junk.

I actually quite liked it, I thought it was an interesting read. It's definitely good to keep getting reminded that letting a company have so much of a stranglehold on a market is not usually a good thing for consumers.
The part about the refunds is just another point that helps hammer home the idea of "Hey, this is a company. These are not your friends, they just want your money and are fucking you over" which is fine with me.

I understand the refund policy, and why its hard for them to come up with a adequate policy. Think about it, someone downloads the softawre and decides they dont like it. How do you refund that? Or what if they download the software, copy out the game files, elsewhere and hack them to play. But request a refund for the original purchase, as they were just using it to get the game files?
Overall I am happy with steam. I no longer have to keep a large bing full on install disks, if i reformat or change my machine i can easily install all my games back, and the steam sales have encouraged me to try games i probably would not have bought in the past.

I get where both of you are coming from. But @ JayD, no one needs to be reminded that Steam is a business unless you are a complete fucking tard. "they just want your money and are fucking you over" doesnt make sense. Sounds like libtard logic. How is Steam fucking anyone over? If you think that, uninstall steam and be done with it. Simple as that. There are plenty of other options to buy games and are still "fucking you over"

Agreed! It is just a business transaction. No different then going to best buy or some other store and buying a game off the shelves. Where, if i recall, the policy is no refunds on opened software.....If that weren't making money, they wouldn't be in business very long.

I dont think anybody in this clan thinks that steam is the be-all-end-all of gaming.
I really cant think of a single person who thinks that. I think this article is a bit redundant. Who is this writer's audience? He seems to be trying to reach the lowest common denominator of the gaming world. But that's just my opinion.

I've never had any problems with Steam, even regarding refunds.

with that said, Steam has never given any trouble other than having me buy games that I'll never play just because they were cheap at one point.
with such a market share and presence, Valve could have been much more evil that they have though I'm no developer and I understand they probably suffer more from Steam's pseudo tyranny than the end users like the linked piece, this is just my not-very-well-educated opinion

I was against getting Steam for the longest time, I just got it like a year or so ago, I think. Regardless, this article seems like it's straight out of a special gaming edition of Breitbart news.
