Why is everyone using this suddenly? I know some people had better performance for it, but are there any other reasons why someone should want to switch? What does it take to run it? I also see discussion about ET 3.0 - are they the same thing or what?

No idea about ET 3.0....but the main and only reason I changed to legacy is because it lets you alt tab from ET. Other than that, I haven't messed with anything legacy . I set it up so its just like regular ET. Basically just copied my et folder to legacy.

What is ET: Legacy?
ET: Legacy is based on the source code of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory which was released under the GPLv3 license. The main goal of this project is to fix bugs, remove old dependencies and make it playable on all major operating systems while still remaining compatible with the ET 2.60b version and as many of its mods as possible.
Got this from the FAQ over at etlegacy.com
http://dev.etlegacy.com/projects/etlegacy/wiki/FAQ
Sounds like nothing but good. It is pretty annoying that silent still has legacy as unrecognized binary.

The reason I switched is because my normal ET install would occasionally ignore my V key. I got pissed off enough one of the times that happened, so I decided to try ET Legacy, and never had the problem again.
That being said, I'm using the RC4 build of it. Their new "stable" release is anything but stable for me.
One nice thing about ET Legacy, is that it downloads and saves custom maps to your documents folder, instead of program files. While that isn't an issue for any seasoned ETplayer, it makes installing and playing ET way easier for anyone you can convince to give it a try.

I was getting weird mouse acceleration and listing issues with the normal install of ET / Windows 8.1 Pro. So I tried Legacy and it seemed to have fixed it.

okay, I guess if vanilla ET works for me, no reason to switch.
As to ALT+TAB, I got a minimize script from Pumpkin one time that I still use. Tap "M" on my keyboard, moves the game into window mode so I can get to my desktop.

Yeah same here, vanilla ET works fine for me so I'm not switching to ET:L. I'll avoid it as much as I can because of the unrecognized binary crap and because Xfire doesn't pick it up either.
As far as the Alt-Tab issue, ET lets me Alt-Tab out of it (which frees up your mouse pointer) but then you have to click on some other window to take the focus away from ET and THEN it actually minimizes. So for me, I use ET Minimizer. It's a 24KB stand-alone .exe file that lets you minimize ET by pressing Alt+Z. It's the easiest way to minimize ET. Period.

I play in windowed mode so I don't have to deal with these shenanigans

The regular ET was not running correctly for me with a quad core processor. THE FPS was way under where it should be and was glitchy. ET legacy resolved my issues i was seeing once i switched to quad core.

Well the reason I'm saying it is because I'm assuming there's some sort of delay between when you press M and when it switches to windowed mode? With ET Minimizer you just press Alt+Z and it minimizes just as if you had just pressed the minimize button on a regular window. No delay.

No delay. In fact sometimes it screws me over mid map.

Silent just needs to work with ET:L team. Easy fix. And to make it work with Xfire just change ETL.exe to ET.exe

It's been two years since the last post about et legacy. I've heard thru ts a lot of you guys use it. Would like to hear the pro and cons of it now. I've heard you can remove fog on maps, which I tried and failed in old school et. Are the folders the same like etmain, silent, etc. and easy to get at. Is Silent mode working with ETL as a partnership in improving the game? Old school et works and that's it?
