Subject:  network connectivity experts needed
so i have noticed that recently my ping has gone to shit

my download speed and upload speeds are steady like they should be (~about 800kb/s download speed is about right for my dsl connection) but whenever i ping things, i get ridiculous values

like ill ping google.com with 150 to 200 ms latency.. wtf it should be like 20 or 30 ms latency ..

so basically im thinking my packages are being sent through somewhere they are not.. could this be a possibility?

Just guessing - looks like your route to the server goes through Chicago then to Denver (8)) then on to San Jose. Anyway, not a lot you can do about that.

I'll have to run these from my house because my work ones are kinda funny --- 1 hop for each of them. I'd get AMAZING ping (28ms) to the server from my office :(

Are you connecting through a proxy or VPN setup?

no, not on purpose at least.

shouldn't the trace rout show if its going through a proxy? and i do not own a vpn fast enough to game with..

tracert should show all the hops. You might need a new demultiplexer(the thing that your cable/telphone connects into) or maybe the router is kaput(try a different ethernet port...maybe the port is shot?).

Another sudo-question...I assume you are a wired connection; but if not, the wireless may be dying on either end. I know allagor had serious 50-100 ping spikes with a dying wireless card.

(edit) beck: 1 hop, You dick. :P

no, im wired to the router. ill try switching ports on the router.
edit: switched ports, it seems to be a bit faster now.. i really am thinking it is because of the poor quality of the router. could this really be the case? i want to be positive before i throw out another 50 to 100 on a good router..

yeah i bet thats the real reason we moved servers :D just so beck could get to the server with one hop. hah!

router is usually the shittiest part of the home network, sadly.

See if someone has a router you can use temporarily to see if it is the router; but thats what I'm guessing.

Honestly a router 30-50$ should do you right. Go Netgear, Linksys, D-link. In that order.

next question. say i get a new router. will i be able to completely swap out the one i have currently (the crap one that verizon, now frontier gave me)?

i previously had a netgear router that i used, but the wireless on it gave out, so i had to go back to what they gave me. but when i had the netgear router, i also had the verizon one hooked up, just as a routed bridge.. i have not tried to only have the netgear one hooked up (now in the trash), so i am not entirely sure if there is some special verizon shit on the verizon router that does something special to make the dsl connection happen.. would make sense that this is not the case, but who knows.. i sure as hell dont! lol

Same. Everyone should be doing this.

You should be able to use any router with your dsl. & setting up wireless (& other functions) usually is done through a web browser gui. Don't qoute me here; there may be some bottom barrel routers that only support cable or dsl.
Also you need to switch modes on your dsl modem so the signal goes through properly.

I'll have to break out the college books from when I did my associates of science in computer network systems. But I am pretty sure there is a way to contact your isp and change the path of your hops. Getting ready for work at a pretty fubar photovoltaic install so my mind is preoccupied at the moment. But we used to have people adjust their routing paths do to connection issues too connect to Final Fantasy XI when I was tech support with S.O.E. We often would run into servers down the path that were port blocking and what not that we had no control over so the ISP would have to route around that hop.

Almost positive now that I think about it a little bit that you can for sure contact your ISP and have your route reconfigured. If you tell them that this is why you have internet connection and if they fail to adjust your routing that you will leave to a more customer service oriented service provider who will assist in maximizing your game play.

Port forwarding?

thanks 2stowned. ill give that a go (although sad thing is that this is the only isp in this area that i can use, i cant get cable here because my complex made a deal with another cable company about 10 years back that disallowed all other cable companies from servicing this complex. needless to say the cable company that they made a deal with, sucks way worse for internet than my current dsl)

@existance, i have no firewall on the router what-so-ever. sad, but true. only because this router is not able to forward ports so its either all blocked or all not blocked. they router documentation shows that port forwarding should be available with this hardware, but googling reveals that this functionality is just not existent for this router. (hence why it is considered to be one of the worst routers ever made) ALSO i think if my ports were being blocked, i would not be able to connect at all to any servers on any et port. since i can, i know that the ports are open.

I've not used Netgear in years, but I'm not impressed with Linksys. I always issues with them. The best router I've owned and still own is a Belkin. I'm sure everyone has a different opinion on a router though.
