I heard civ beyond earth acts more like an expansion to civ v more than a standalone game

I wouldn't call it an expansion necessarily. The mechanics of the game are very similar. The graphics and gameplay are basically the same, so from the respect it could be interpreted that way. But it took me a bit to get used to playing a futuristic based game with entirely new techs, resources and units. There is a learning curve to the basics of the game for even an experienced civ player. But basically the game is the same. You build colonists (settlers), found new outposts (cities), build units, perform research (although it's not a linear loose tree like prior Civs - its an entirely new web-based thing where you can really focus on specific branches, neglecting others). Gold from Civ is now Energy. There is no happiness, it's now health. There is still culture and food. Instead of barbarians, there are aliens which in the early part of the game can be pretty formidable. The upgrade system for units is totally awesome though. You don't have to pay to upgrade, your units just automatically progress as you add new affinity levels. And they are really badass, there are some really really sweet units. Probably one of the coolest things is that there is sort of a loose storyline that goes with the game. You get prompts to make choices all the time that will affect buildings and other things, so you can really specialize on particular attributes depending on your intended victory type. So for example, you get asked if you want to improve production for a certain building and can choose +1 energy or +1 production. Things like that. Also, when your units upgrade, you can pick between two bonuses, like +30% attack or +5 health per turn. Kind of like in regular Civ when you get an XP upgrade, you can pick certain attributes to improve. But this improves all the units, even though already built and deployed. There is still a veternacy system for units based on XP. There is also a better focus on covert ops in this game. You can assign them to cities much easier and quickly than you could with the old civ games, and have them do missions to steal science or energy, or at certain levels even sabotage and force coups and stuff.

Currently I have been spending a lot of time on Majesty 2 and its add on expansions. I have a few missions to complete in kingdom of ardania and then i can work on the monsters expansion. Following that i have several other games stocked up. I bought a lot on the steam sale as my 2015 goals are to pay down some bills, which means staying home more so i spend less

It's a solid game, it's just not as compelling to some people as the other Civs because it doesn't have to cool 'based on history' aspect to it.

I've been playing Cities: Skylines. If any of you have ever been a fan of the city building sims in the past, GET THIS GAME. This is the best city building sim I've ever played. I've been playing the piss out of it every chance i get since it came out a few days ago. It's the first game in a great long while that I have had to forcefully stop myself from playing because I needed to do other things. It's just perfect. Brings back the good old days of the first few Simcitys. And one of the great things about this game, is that its cheap. It released only a few days for the price of 29.99. It's everything that the newer Simcity 2013 should of been, but the shit the bed on.

Here's a trailer for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVhYSyVbGBs

Damn. Gotta stay at my desk for a few minutes to wait for my boner to go away. I'll be checking this out for sure.

EDIT: Watching a YouTube - this is STRIKINGLY similar to the new Sim City. Almost an exact copy so far....

They took all of the good things from the new SimCity for sure, the game is absolutely amazing if you are even remotely interested in the genre, trust me. And its not super easy like SimCity was. Your first few cities will suck, hard. It's incredibly fun to envision a city before you even start building it, and then actually be able to build what you imagined. Unlike SimCity, where you get a tiny little plot of land to make a city on. The game is just what everyone who was disappointed by SimCity were waiting for.

Just something about working on your traffic flow for 3 hours straight, and then finally getting it right, looking how you wanted it to all along, its just awesome.
